THE HR BREAKDOWN

Job supervisors with disabilities can boost productivity, research indicates

Large companies like Walgreens, Wells Fargo, and Proctor & Gamble are successfully integrating individuals with disabilities into their workforce. However, many employers are missing out on the potential contributions of the approximately 6.5% of the U.S. workforce with disabilities. Research by Dustin Cole from Auburn University highlights that teams with supervisors who have disabilities can achieve higher productivity. “They at least understand I’m struggling,” noted a worker, emphasising the importance of shared experiences. As the number of individuals with disabilities in the workforce rises, employers must adapt their practices. Companies like BMW and Dotson Iron Casting are already making changes to accommodate an ageing workforce. The research findings suggest that hiring more managers with disabilities could lead to significant improvements in workplace dynamics and productivity.
